Gilda's appreciation for artistic expression and a good education was nurtured by supportive family members of diverse professional and artistic backgrounds. As a young child, she enjoyed few things more than cracking open a new sketchbook, lured and excited by the promise of endless possibilities held in its blank pages. She spent Saturday mornings with her brother, either drawing with their mother in grandma's garden or in their shared room, quietly losing themselves in worlds of fish infinitely splashing in the ocean and happy stick people waving from moving cars.
Gilda obtained her BFA in Graphic Design from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in the spring of 2003 with the encouragement of her high school art teacher, the continued support of her family and partner, and the benefits of her previous and continued scholastic achievements. It was around that same period that she first became exposed to the art of tattooing, ultimately deciding to commemorate her upcoming graduation with her first piece of body art. Unsurprisingly, the siren song of the tattoo machine seduced her, and months later she embarked on her 3-year apprenticeship with friend, teacher and experienced tattoo artist Fatty.
Her interest in the natural world is evident in her depictions of oceanic and botanical life as well as her figurative work, which has been a main interest since her earliest encounters with pencil and paper. Her work is as influenced by humor, music, and everyday situations as by themes of gender and sexuality, dreams and the subconscious, spirituality and the occult. La profunda apreciación de Gilda Acosta por la expresión artística y una buena educación fue nutrida por el apoyo de familiares con antecedentes profesionales y artísticos diversos. Desde muy niña, disfrutaba pocas cosas más que abrir un nuevo cuaderno de dibujo, atraída y emocionada por las infinitas posibilidades contenidas en sus páginas en blanco. Pasaba las mañanas de los sábados con su hermano Josue, ya sea dibujando con su mamá en el jardín de la abuela o en su cuarto compartido, calladamente perdiéndose en mundos de peces infinitamente chapoteando en el océano y personas de palitos saludando desde sus carros en movimiento.
Gilda obtuvo su licenciatura en Diseño Gráfico del Corcoran College of Art and Design en la primavera del 2003 alentada por su profesor de arte de secundaria, el apoyo continuo de su familia y su pareja, y los beneficios de sus anteriores y continuados logros académicos. Fue en esa época que por primera vez conoció el arte del tatuaje, decidiendo conmemorar su próxima graduación con su primera pieza de arte corporal.
No es sorprendente que el canto de sirena de la máquina de tatuar ejerciera su poder sobre ella. Meses más tarde se embarcaría en un aprendizaje de tres años con su amigo, maestro y experimentado artista del tatuaje, Fatty.
Su interés en el mundo natural es evidente en sus representaciones de la vida oceánica y botánica así como en su obra figurativa, la cual ha sido un interés principal desde sus primeros encuentros con lápiz y papel. Su trabajo muestra la influencia tanto del humor, la música y de situaciones diarias, como de temas de género y sexualidad, sueños y el subconsciente, espiritualidad y lo oculto.
